Harwood's Hole is a cave system located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of several important cave systems in Takaka Hill, between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. Starting at the surface as a 50 metre round entrance and descending 183 metres, Harwood Hole is New Zealand's deepest vertical shaft. Further in it connects with Starlight Cave. The long rope descent is considered one of the most spectacular parts of the caving experience at Harwood's. Harwood's Hole has an overall depth of 357m. Henry Harwood (1844–1927), with John Horton and Thomas Manson, opened up the Canaan Downs area and discovered Harwood's Hole, though it was not immediately entered. It remained untouched until cavers winched down in 1958. Upon completion of exploration in 1959, Harwood Hole became the deepest explored cave in New Zealand, a record that stood for many years.

Pupu Springs is out of Takaka and on the way to Golden Bay. This is Golden Bay’s most popular and famous attraction. The spring system is the largest in NZ and among the 100 largest in the world. The water is the clearest you will ever see, after all it is considered to be among the clearest water in the world. The qualities of the water are of considerable scientific interest. In 1993, The National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) carried out optical measurements under water and found that the horizontal visibility was 63 metres. This is very close to optically pure water, with clearer water found only beneath Antarctica’s near-frozen Weddell Sea. The water clarity is a result of natural filtering prior to the water’s emergence at Te Waikoropup? Springs. From the viewing platform, an extraordinary view of the colours and workings of the underwater world is revealed. The water has a constant temperature of 11.7 degrees. The area is culturally significant and is wahi tapu, or a sacred site, to Maori.
